المستخلص:The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize the applications in academic libraries for the management of Big Data and research information in its many forms. That is because it has become apparent that Big Data analyses can reveal patterns, trends and associations relevant to businesses, academic institutions and libraries. That informs the parent institution about the socioeconomic impact of its research output. The approach is to review literature in discussing the management and significance of academic research, followed by a focus on the Big Data topic, and ending with the author’s thoughts about library held/ managed scholarly research data and Big Data. As a conceptual paper, the ideas are based on integrating and proposing pragmatic relationships between academic library service, scholarly research data, and the evolving Big Data picture. The findings suggest that librarians have a special role to play in data mining, data curation and management of research data, and can use their expertise to highlight faculty productivity, and student projects, in addition to their primary function of being central to supporting scholarly activity. They also need to stay knowledgeable about Big Data and its impact on their work. The limitation is that rather than being field research-based, the ideas are dependent on postulating what can be done following the lessons observed and learned from various places. However, the article apprises librarian practice in collecting, organizing, curating, and managing research data and information. The learning objective is to inform about the relevance of Big Data to academic librarianship, including in the GCC region, where there is a dearth of such literature, and encourages context-specific pragmatic approaches in an unfolding Big Data environment.
