| المستخلص: | Libraries receive their importance for managing and storing intellectual assets. It is widely used by government, universities, research institutes, and the public. Libraries hold have large amounts of data about the people interaction with libraries which can contribute to improve library service quality. However, libraries need to understand these data and know how to transform, analyze, and present data in order to facilitate knowledge creation. Librarians are well aware of opportunities which big data provides as will lead for a better informed decisions and can transform users experience with libraries and bring it to a more advanced level. But this comes with challenges that libraries are thinking of and are aware of. For instance, library staff competences, infrastructure and financial support are some of the major issues that libraries face for a better utilization of big data. Issues such as privacy and information security are other issues that libraries perceive as a challenge. The availability of analytics of big data, such as information visualization tools, researchers as well as users can provide new ways to look at data. In this work, the authors investigate the concept of big data from information department staff at the University of Jordan. This is an attempt to uncover big data, analytics and challenges in academic libraries. A review for the research work on library big data was conducted and a summary about the applications and research directions in this field was made. The status of big data research in library in Jordan is discussed using University of Jordan case. The challenges associated with it are also discussed and explored. |
