By putting in parallel English and French theatre, he does not confirm only the superiority of the dramaturgy of Shakespeare, but he leaves no doubt that the tragedy of Racine no longer meets the needs of the new society that has just been born after the French Revolution. In opposing the coldness of the classical theatre, Stendhal claims, in Racine and Shakespeare, 'a fourteen July in theatre'. Théoricien du théâtre romantique, Stendhal déclare la guerre contre le théâtre classique et ses règles qui empêchent la liberté de l’imagination. En mettant en parallèle le théâtre français et anglais, il ne confirme pas seulement la supériorité de la dramaturgie de Shakespeare, mais il ne laisse pas de doute que la tragédie de Racine ne répond plus aux besoins de la nouvelle société qui vient de naître après la Révolution française. En s’opposant à la froideur du théâtre classique, Stendhal revendique, dans Racine et Shakespeare, ‘un quatorze juillet en théâtre’. |
