المستخلص:Waste disposal is a major concern today and its management is a key aspect of the environmental management of food & beverage (F&B) operations. In the current research, relevant literature is being reviewed and the current status of waste management in Alexandria F&B operations is being investigated by surveying the 63 licensed F&B operations in Alexandria. Managers of these operations were requested to participate in the study by filling in the study questionnaire. In addition, structured interviews were conducted with two inspectors of environmental audit unit in Alexandria governorate. Findings revealed that logistical problems including hauling and landfills legislation, as well as, availability of recycling and composting facilities stood as the most challenging barriers for carrying out an efficient waste management system. The current research also revealed the need for reliable waste segregation units for successful management of waste and that health and sanitation problems hindered donations to food banks. Eventually, F&B operations were found to be focusing only on cost reductions not on creating positive environmental impacts. This could give an idea of how much room for improvement there is. More studies need to be carried out on the implementation of sustainable waste management for the hospitality industry in general and in F&B operations, in particular, including different cities allover Egypt to evaluate the challenges and opportunities involved.
