| المستخلص: | This study is an attempt to analyze the use of symbolism in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. It aims at shedding light on the motives behind the use of such a figure of speech (symbolism) in this novel. This work is divided into three chapters. The first chapter defines the notion of aestheticism in general, presents a general survey of figurative language and tackles some of the main theories of symbolism attributed to some scholars such as Whitehead, Langer, Freud, Frye and Saussure. Ferdinand De Saussure’s Theory is the one which is applied in this work. The second chapter is a critical review of Golding’s literature, namely some views on Lord of the Flies. The third chapter deals with the illustrations and the analysis of symbolism in the novel. Golding overuses symbols in the novel in order to dress his language up to give it an artistic beauty and aesthetic taste and this allows him to implicitly express his views on human nature. All in all, this inquiry shows that this linguistic device has a specific function in enriching the language of any literary work. |
