| المستخلص: | Terminology, a science whose aim is to study terms of specific domains of human understanding, is very important in this era of rapid scientific and technical progress. Terms are keys to science and knowledge. They pave the way to scholars and help them understand each other. This activity has been developed as an independent subject field with its rules and laws only with the intense need for translation. The translator’s interest in terminology is activated by the overgrowing flow of new terms together with the newly founded subject fields. Nations do not share all the scientific and technical experiences. So if a concept does not exist in a given nation, it is not necessary for its language to possess a term that designates it. Previously, with the slow progress of human creations and activities, the translator could cope with the newly created terms, either by loaning or assigning a new sense to already existing terms. To help the translator practice his activity properly, linguists have made great investigations in the field of terminology, and established its theory so as to serve, in part, as the infrastructure of the translator’s work. For this reason, contemporary terminology is mainly bilingual, identified more precisely as comparative terminology. The aim of this activity is to investigate the terminology of a subject field in each language and then compare the result of these separate investigations. The comparative study reveals some tendencies in the functioning of technical languages that allow for the making of consistent bilingual or multilingual terminologies: it helps to discover the noncorrespondence between terms and their proposed translations, together with the gaps that may exist in some languages. To achieve this, comparative terminology seeks first, whether a given concept in language A corresponds exactly to the same concept in language B, then it finds out whether the relation between a concept and a term in language A is the same for the corresponding term in language B. |
