المستخلص: | The current study attempts to find out how the Salafists are represented as social actors in the Egyptian news reports during the post-January, 2011 revolution period. Using van Dijk's(1998)'ideological square', van Leeuwen's (1996) 'system network for the representation of social actors’, the researcher analyzes how the Salafists are represented as social actors in the news reports of seven daily newspapers with wide readership. Data analysis shows that the Salafistsare represented in the news reports of the study by means of categorization, specification, collectivization and abstraction. While collectivization and categorization highlighted the shared traits and values of the individual members of the Salafist group, abstraction helped the journalists to go beyond a basic evaluation of the Salafists to evaluating their thoughts and ideas. |
