| 520 | |b This article is a preliminary attempt to trace the various links between classical/written and vernacular/oral Arabic literature. My aim first is to show how strongly the two traditions are intertwined and second to find the defining features of folk literature in the Arab culture and whether the features usually appealed to in Western scholarship to define the field apply to Arabic situation. In addition to folkloristic themes and motifs interspersed throughout the classical literature, I will show that classical writers have shown a great deal of interest in the folk material and they have expressed some views on this subject worthy of our consideration. | ||
