520 |b Writing about mukhtalaf (conflicting) and mushkil (those traditions whose meanings are not easily understood) traditions is problematic though of utmost importance especially at present amid the campaign of doubt against the Prophetic sunna, claims of conflicting narratives, sarcasm, and rejecting it in its entirety. I tried to do my best to write on the two ways in which hadith scholars and Islamic legal theorists deal with mukhtalaf and mushkil traditions: by refuting weak traditions and reconciling between weak and authentic traditions. The paper includes two chapters: The first chapter is entitled “Defining [the discipline of] mukhtalaf and mushkil traditions, the benefit of its study, its origin, and works composed on it. The chapter is further divided into two sections: The first discusses the linguistic and technical meanings of mukhtalaf and mushkil traditions, the criteria that renders them as such, followed by a discussion of the benefit of studying this discipline and its development. The second section is entitled “Scholarly means of dealing with mukhtalaf and mushkil traditions”. This is further divided into two sub-sections: The first is entitled “Refuting weak traditions” and the second is “Reconciling between traditions”. This section focuses on the conditions and means of reconciling between traditions which fall under the category of mukhtalaf and those which fall under mushkil. From the above, it is concluded that the study of this discipline and the joint efforts of hadith and Islamic legal theorists generate a solid defense of the blessed sunna. It:  Shows that the fragmentation that has occurred between the sunna, its sciences and usul al-fiqh (principles of jurisprudence) was at the expense of the sunna itself and Islamic law.  Affords an understanding of the Prophetic sunna by means of both usul al-fiqh and ilm mustalah al-hadith (the principles and rules governing the text and ascription of traditions with regard to their acceptance and rejection): a. It refutes false misconceptions claiming the existence of discrepancies between Prophetic traditions or between Prophetic traditions and the Holy Qur`an. b. It exonerates the transmitters of the sunna from negligence, delusion, forgetfulness, and misunderstanding traditions. c. It demonstrates that the methodology of ahlul sunna wal jama’a is manifested in understanding Prophetic traditions classified under mukhtalaf and mushkil and knowing how to deal with them. d. It demonstrates that the methodology of ahlul sunna wal jama’a in understanding Prophetic traditions is that which agrees with reason and logic. e. It allows specialists of Islamic sciences to acquire the aptitude to reconcile between conflicting traditions and others. f. It defends the Prophetic sunna against claims that of discrepancies. And may the peace and blessings be upon our master Muhammad and upon his family and praise be to God, Lord of the worlds.
