| المستخلص: | The aim of this research is to explore the relationship between patriarchal authority and female exploitation in Angela Carter’s The Magic Toyshop. Female oppression at the hands of a powerful patriarchal figure is directly related in the novel to the organization of domestic space, which enforces gender hierarchies within the family. The research adopts Foucault’s views on the relationship between power, space, and the body to analyze the role of space in sustaining masculine authority and subjugating women. Foucault regards space as a central element in the operations of modern power which produce submissive and self-controlled individuals or "docile bodies". The research, therefore, provides a feminist application of Foucault’s theory of power and the body through exploring the relationship between patriarchal authority, spatial construction, and female oppression in Carter’s novel. |
