| المستخلص: | The objective of this study is to assess the developments in the agricultural terms of trade (ATT) in Egypt over the period 2007-2013 in order to shed light on the overall wellbeing of farmers. To do this we split the conventional ATT and constructed three different indexes. The first index (Ia) which compared the prices of the main agricultural output crops with the main input prices - excluding rent - depicted an improvement in the ATT during the study period. However, when rents of lands were included in costs, an alternative index (Ic) proved that there was neither improvement nor deterioration in ATT, probably implying that rent swallows any increase in agricultural output prices in favor of the landowners rather than the tenants. The index comparing agricultural output prices with the major manufactured consumer goods consumed by farmers showed a slight improvement over the period examined, implying that the ATT have not turned against fanners, but rather that the rising agricultural world prices, that was followed by the catching up domestic prices, have left farmers slightly better off when compared to manufacturers prices. |
