الوصف
المستخلص:Metaphors are a culture-specific, pervasive and universal lexical phenomenon that merits a thorough coverage in the dictionary irrespective of its type. However, due to the multi-faceted and complex nature of this phenomenon, the scope of this paper is restricted to one particular area; namely that of lexicalized (or dead) metaphors. It examines the treatment of this type of metaphors in Arabic-English-Arabic dictionaries, focusing on the actual citation of metaphorical senses in the source language (SL), the utilization of the metaphorical potential in the target language (TL), translation procedures employed in their translation and other features that may help the dictionary user such as sense discrimination, collocations and illustrative examples. The survey of four major bilingual dictionaries shows that the methodology used in the treatment of lexicalized metaphors is flawed and is likely to lead to misunderstanding or even errors in language usage. It concludes by proposing a schematic framework that would address the deficiencies and enable the dictionary user to benefit optimally from this lexical phenomenon.
