| المستخلص: | تعد مسرحية (عطيل) للشاعر والكاتب المسرحي الإنكليزي (وليم شكسبير) إحدى روائع المسرحيات ذات الطابع المأسوي التي كتبت في أوائل القرن السابع عشر في إنكلترا. تكمن خصوصية هذه المسرحية في أنها تعالج مشكلة ذات شأن كبير شغلت الغرب لمدة طويلة من الزمن. إنها مشكلة التمييز العرقي التي حاول شكسبير من خلالها أن يسلط الضوء على شخصية بطل المسرحية ذي البشرة الداكنة والدخيل على مجتمع يتميز ببشرة بيضاء، ومما زاد في حدة التناقض بين بطل المسرحية من جهة ومعظم الشخصيات من جهة ثانية هو المكانة التي تبوأها والتي أهلته لقيادة جيش مدينة البندقية لمحاربة الأتراك الذين حاولوا غزو قبرص. يتمحور هذا البحث حول دراسة دلالات التعابير ذات الصلة بالتمييز العرقي التي استخدمها شكسبير في مسرحيته ووضعها في متناول الشخصيات التي حاولت أن تنال من بطل المسرحية. تم التركيز بشكل رئيس حول أهمية هذه التعابير من خلال سبر دلالاتها ودراسة مضامينها المختلفة للإحاطة بالمدى الذي استطاع شكسبير في يطرح من خلاله أفكارا متعلقة بمسألة التمييز العرقي، وأن يرسم لنا صورا حية في قالب لغوي غني ومتنوع بتعابير مختلفة ومتعددة. وقد وجدت أن الطريق الأمثل والأكثر ملائمة لبلوغ مثل هذا الهدف يتم من خلال التركيز على دراسة دلالات ومعاني المفردات والعبارات والتراكيب والجمل التي وردت ملازمة لفكرة التمييز العرقي بكثرة في هذه المسرحية. The purpose of this paper is to handle an important point of Shakespeare’s Elizabethan English concerned with the pejorative values and terms imbued with racial overtones and designations in Othello. The overemphasizing of these terms with various associations and meanings and their relationship to other necessary derogatory statements required for the dramatization of the play, necessities an investigation and explication of these terms that I intend to consider as ‘dark’ vocabularies in this paper. Therefore the main objective is to explore the significance of those ‘dark’ vocabularies in Shakespeare’s Othello. I think the most appropriate way to do this is to analyse the associations or what I consider as lexical links of these ‘dark’ vocabularies, because it is through the company that words keep that one may come to some understanding of what their meaning and significance are. This study is planned to cover an investigation of Shakespeare’s usage of ‘dark word’ associations. And I think that this can be done through examining several single key words that help to probe sets of lexical items that very frequently associate with. The relation that links single words with other lexical items to form a specific semantic field is generally known as collocation. Sets of lexical items are divided according to the semantic fields they constitute. This helps the reader know how chunks or segments of the tragic scenes are portrayed and dramatized. I do not claim that this will reveal a complete picture of the Elizabethan society, but, at least, a better view of how Elizabethans manipulated the dark vocabularies is to be given. I hope in so doing that the reader will be able to familiarize himself with some aspects of the period and gratify some of his intuition. This also will show how far Shakespeare was successful in investigating the inner nature of characters and how well he drew on the intricate weave of different intellectual and spiritual disposition of his characters. This also reveals how much sensitive to the gamut of Elizabethan life Shakespeare was. He was particularly alert to different modes of consciousness, interests, and immediate responses of the characters he depicts. This made him rivet his readers and audiences through his superb authority and mastering grip on English of the Elizabethan world. |
