This article addresses a topic that falls within the domain of contemporary French lexicography. It is about analyzing how the Historical Dictionary of the French language (Le Robert Historique, now called le RH) deals with the French lexicon, the first use of which has been attested in Algeria. To do this, from inputs from HR, we have created a corpus of all the French words having been attested for the first time in Algeria (28 words). Then, by adopting a descriptiveanalytical and comparative method, we are interested in studying how these words are handled by HR. Actually, our aim is to demonstrate how these words are classified and defined by HR. Finally, it is important for us to point out that the results of our study will also allow us to propose a definition of what we mean by the expression »Algerian French''. The present study allowed us to confirm that the HR applies the same lexicographic treatment to the whole of the French lexicon, including Algerian French. On the other hand, if the HR defines and lists all the uses of the entire contemporary French lexicon, in the case of Algerian French, it is only interested in words attested in the colonial period (1830-1962). This lexicographical choice also applies to the description of the contextualized uses of Algerian French words. Therefore, HR defines Algerian French by adopting a limited historical selection approach. In other words, Algerian French is made up solely and exclusively from words attested for the first time in Algeria during the colonial period. Le présent article aborde un sujet qui relève du domaine de la lexicographie francophone contemporaine. Il s’agit d’analyser comment le Dictionnaire Historique de la langue française (le Robert Historique, baptisé désormais le RH) traite le lexique français dont le premier usage a été attesté en Algérie. Pour ce faire, à partir des entrées du RH, nous avons constitué un corpus de tous les mots français ayant été attestés pour la première fois en Algérie (28 mots). Ensuite, en adoptant une méthode descriptive- analytique et comparative, nous nous sommes intéressés à étudier la manière dont ces mots sont traités par le RH. En fait, notre objectif est de démontrer comment ces mots sont classés et définies par le RH. Enfin, il nous importe de préciser que les résultats de notre étude permettront également de proposer une définition de ce que nous entendons par l’expression « français algérien ». La présente étude nous a permis de confirmer que le RH applique le même traitement lexicographique sur l’ensemble du lexique français, y compris le français algérien. En revanche, si le RH définit et recense les usages de tout le lexique français contemporain, dans le cas du français algérien, il ne s’intéresse qu’aux mots attestés dans la période coloniale (1830-1962). Ce choix lexicographique s’applique également sur la description des usages contextualisés des mots du français algérien. Par conséquent, le RH définit le français algérien en adoptant une démarche de sélection historique limitée. Autrement dit, le français algérien est constitué uniquement et exclusivement à partir des mots attestés la première fois en Algérie durant la période coloniale. |
