The current study analyzes the death of the figure of the typical hero of the nineteenth century novel in Little Misunderstandings of No Importance (1985) and Islands (1985) by Antonio Tabucchi. The purpose of this article is to identify the traits characterizing the existential crisis of Tabucchi's character by resorting to the theory of the Superman developed by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. In the stories discussed, in fact, the complete disappearance of the man of Nietzsche's rejection appears to leave room for the representation of figures that resemble ghost-characters or elusive entities. Therefore, it is in this junction that the motivation behind the choice of the title appears: in Tabucchi's stories, the man who should shout the death of God to the world is the one who, instead, announces his own death in the face of an existence governed by misunderstanding, of which he becomes an inert spectator and slave of that cruel and ruthless mechanism that is life.
