| المستخلص: | Throughout the years, very little attention was paid to the perception of phonation, and most researches focused only on its production. This study aims at examining the effects of linguistic experience on how phonation contrasts are perceived. To do that, three groups of listeners (English, Arabic, and Hindi) are recruited, and are asked to listen to stimuli of different languages with different phonation contrasts. It is hypothesized that Hindi listeners will be able to distinguish breathy phonation easily, while Arabic and English listeners will be sensitive to some phonation contrasts. The data is analyzed on two different levels: consistency and percentage of correctness and the model of analysis is taken from Esposito (2006). The results show that the Hindi listeners are indeed able to identify breathy sounds, unlike English and Arabic listeners, who face difficulties in recognizing the modal-breathy contrast. |
