| 520 | |b This research deals with -ingsupplementive clauses in literary and scientific texts, a kind of adverbial clauses which are not introduced by a subordinator. The present research aims at the following: 1) describing ingsupplementive clauses semantically and grammatically, 2) finding the differences and similarities (if any) between literary and scientific texts concerning -ingsupplementive clauses at the levels of occurrences (initial, medial, final) of these clauses, the relationship held between the (superordinate) clause on which the -ingsupplementive clause is dependent, 3) and the frequency of these clauses in the literary and scientific texts chosen. Investigating these areas of study is done through tackling 60000 words as a sample of literary texts, vs. 60000 words as a sample of scientific texts. The data collected are analysed according to Quirk et al (1985) as a model. The study concludes that literary texts are significantly richer with -ingsupplementive clauses than scientific texts. | ||
