| المستخلص: | شهدت الإمبراطورية الرومانية خلال منتصف القرن الثالث الميلادي، أزمة حادة على مختلف الأصعدة، أدخلتها في فوضى عارمة، العسكرية على وجه الخصوص، ما دفع بالأباطرة للمجازفة من خلال إدخال البرابرة في الجيش، وعليه بروز عناصر غير رومانية في المناصب الحساسة التي أثبتوا جدارتهم فيها، ما سمح لهم في الأخير بتقليد مناصب عليا في الإدارة العسكرية. يروم هذا البحث إلى محاولة إلقاء الضوء على الجيش الروماني والدور الهام في حماية حدود الإمبراطورية من الأخطار الخارجية، وضلعه الفعال في درء أزمة القرن الثالث الميلادي، من خلال التطرق إلى بنية الجيش الروماني الجديدة وعدد قواته، فضلا عن التحصينات العسكرية المختلفة المتخذة من قبل الأباطرة لصد غارات البرابرة المغيرين.
