| المستخلص: | Teaching identity is a dynamic and discursive process that can evolve and be affected by various approaches. As a window on teaching English as a foreign language, a growing body of research had adopted a sociocultural perspective in assisting the development of language and identity. This perspective has contributed to the identification of the changing aspects of identity in teaching and learning English language. In this vein, the present research aims at investigating the formation of identity from a sociocultural perspective in learning English language in Algerian universities. It seeks to study the sociocultural aspects integrated in reshaping identity and the role attributed to its lineation with the development of language and the transformation of identity. Thus, the present study follows Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory in which postgraduate English Language University teachers and students are provided with a survey research to share their experience about the formation and development of their identity vis-a-vis the language they are learning and the sociocultural aspects it embeds. The findings revealed that learning a language and constructing its identity from a sociocultural perspective is particularly a meaningful indicator of its development. |
