المستخلص: | Entrusted as the first lady in the short story writing of this age, the Canadian fictionist, Alice Munro's mastery of the genre is unrivaled. This paper deals with identity, ambition and choice in her many-prizes-winning short stories collection, Runaway. The work is heavily focused on escaping as the title states. These points are considered in relation to feminism premises as the writer builds up her novel around women and tackles women's rights to freedom of choice, passion of ambition and struggle of identity. In the research, the strategy to be followed is to consider the circumstances enveloping the protagonist escape; to examine the choices availed the protagonist; and to measure the protagonist in the after-escape state. Next, a general discussion to the concerns of identity, ambition and choice is done with reference to the mainstream critical thought. Last, the research is concluded by an assessment of these concepts and their activation in the work. It is shown that the concept of identity, being the ultimate sum of all the other concerns in the research, is ambivalent. |
