المستخلص:Background In the behavioral sciences, the limits of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) make theory testing problematic. An alternate technique called Testing Theory- Based Quantitative Predictions (TTQP) uses effect size estimates and confidence intervals to directly test theoretical predictions. Purpose To investigate the TTQP approach as an alternative to NHST, researchers attempted to extend previously published findings to exercise behavior. Method this study investigated baseline readiness to change in exercise (N=864), using the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). Researchers examined the TTM predictor variables to determine if effect sizes from exercise interventions could be predicted by effect sizes previously found in another health behavior, smoking. Results 8 of 12 exercise predictions were confirmed using smoking predictions. Conclusions Confirmed predictions provide support for the theoretical model using exercise construct. More research is needed, through replication and further examination, to strengthen the findings. Using the observed effect sizes from the current study, researchers should replicate the findings with different samples, in order to increase reliability and accuracy.
